What is an Aquamarine Engagement Ring?

Aquamarine engagement rings are those that have an aquamarine stone as the central stone.  Aquamarine is a light blue to turquoise colored type of Beryl, which is the same type of stone that emeralds are.  They are mined in many countries throughout the world – United States, Colombia, Zambia, Madagascar, Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya, but the best usually come from Brazil.   These also tend to be the most expensive, because of their reputation.

How to Select an Aquamarine Engagement Ring

Selecting an aquamarine ring really comes down to preference more than anything.  Colors vary from a very light blue, to turquoise, to a much richer blue color. The richer and more pure the color of blue, the higher the cost, but this does not necessarily mean they are any more beautiful.  Turquoise aquamarines are often cheaper, but have their own special beauty.

Aside from the color, just like any stone, you will want to check for scratches, impurities, and poor color.  Good quality aquamarines are usually nearly flawless, and that is what you should look for, including great clarity, which you can see by holding them up to the light.

Typical aquamarine engagement rings usually have either a princess cut or an oval cut stone, though round cut aquamarines are also very common.   The preference for the cut is up to you, and you can find stones cut in other shapes as well.

Different Types of Aquamarine Engagement Rings

A typical aquamarine ring is a gold or white gold band with a fairly large aquamarine on top.  However, there are other styles you may want to consider, if you are looking for something a little more unique.  Here are some options:

  • A central diamond with an aquamarine on each side.
  • A central diamond, with aquamarines embedded into the band.
  • A two-toned band, with a central aquamarine diamond.
  • A white gold back, with a filigree setting around a large central aquamarine.
  • A central aquamarine, and a diamond embedded band.

Why choose an aquamarine engagement ring?

The aquamarine stone is the gemstone for the month of March, and often represents the sea.  This means it could make a great engagement ring for anyone who was born in March, engaged I in March or who has a real affinity for the sea – a snorkeler, diver, sailor, or anyone who spends all their time at the beach.  This would also make a great ring for someone who wants something a little different than the traditional diamond.
