Oval engagement rings are a very popular style of engagement ring. They usually refer to an oval cut diamond that is set as the central stone on a ring.
What makes an oval cut so special?
The oval cut is very similar to the round brilliant, which is the most popular cut of diamond. They tend to have a lot of sparkle, and as the name suggests, they are in the shape of an oval. This gives you two options for how you decide to set the stone. Vertical, in line with the finger, or horizontal, perpendicular to the finger. Both have their charm, and how you decide to set it will depend on personal preference.
Are there more unique types of oval engagement rings?
Absolutely. Typically, this type of ring has a gold, white gold, or platinum band. Set in the very center is the oval diamond. Nevertheless, there are many ways you can make your oval diamond ring unique. For example, you can purchase a two-tone band, which could be a mix of white and yellow gold. Another option would be to get a band that is embedded with very small diamonds, leading to the large diamond ring on top. You could also have the band embedded with other favorite gems.
Our personal favorite? A white gold band, with an oval diamond centered between two smaller diamonds. These are elegant, flashy, and just downright sexy.
Are they only available as diamond rings?
A diamond oval engagement ring is by far the most common. However, like any cut of diamond, there are the diamond-substitute “copycats” that can be used in their place. These include cubic zirconia and moissanite. If you are looking for a cheap engagement ring, these are two excellent options. The rings will look almost the same, but will cost a fraction of the price.
How to select an oval engagement ring?
If you have decided this is the engagement ring you want, you will have to first decide on a budget. Then decide on if you want a classic style ring, or something a little different. Usually, the best way to go is start by finding a really nice classic oval ring. If you have extra money, and you want something a little different, ask the jeweler for some options.
Always remember when selecting diamonds to follow the four Cs – cut, clarity, color, and carot.
